Prepape: EdTech Platform Stabilisation, Data Restructuring, and Production Delivery

    Project Overview

Prepape is a fully functioning ed-tech platform focused on learning through multiple-choice test practice. The platform includes a question database, a test-creator engine that assembles exams, user authentication with tiered access (basic vs premium), and a live production web application used by real users. At the time of engagement, the platform was already live and in use, with upcoming structural and operational changes required. Scalexa took over an already-running production system and delivered database restructuring, domain migration, authentication reconfiguration, and ongoing production fixes—all without disrupting active users.

    The Challenge

The platform required significant structural changes while remaining operational. The existing database needed replacement, which meant the test creator logic—tightly coupled to the old schema—had to be refactored. A domain migration was pending, and the Auth0 configuration required a full reset. Multiple content and UI updates were needed across the landing page and application. Throughout rollout, production bugs and edge cases surfaced that required immediate attention. Clear handover documentation was essential at the end of the engagement.

    • Database replacement requiring changes to question and test generation logic
    • Test creator refactoring to align with the new schema structure
    • Domain migration without breaking authentication or user access
    • Auth0 database reset and re-initialisation
    • Content and UI text updates across landing page and application
    • Production bugs and edge cases discovered during testing
    • Handover documentation for ongoing maintenance

    What Scalexa Delivered

Scalexa took ownership of the production platform and established a proper staging-to-production workflow. The test creator was modified to work with the new database structure. The domain migration was executed with frontend, backend, and Auth0 configuration kept aligned. The Auth0 database was reset and reconfigured to support the new setup. UI and content changes were implemented across the landing page and application. Production issues—including display logic for available essays across user tiers—were fixed during testing. A popup email capture mechanism was added to support user engagement. The engagement concluded with a structured handover including documentation and environment access details.

    • Established staging-to-production workflow for controlled deployments
    • Modified test creator to work with new database structure
    • Executed domain migration with aligned frontend, backend, and Auth0 configuration
    • Reset and reconfigured Auth0 database safely
    • Implemented UI and content changes across landing page and application
    • Fixed production issues including tier-based essay display logic
    • Deployed fixes incrementally: staging validation, then production merge
    • Added popup email capture for marketing support
    • Completed structured handover with documentation and access details

    Solution Architecture

The platform runs on a straightforward, maintainable stack. The frontend is an Angular web application. Authentication is handled through Auth0. The database is MySQL, with schema migration and test-creator alignment completed as part of this engagement. Hosting is on AWS, with EC2 for application runtime and S3 for static assets. Infrastructure is managed through Terraform, enabling version-controlled provisioning and consistent environment replication. The deployment flow follows a staging-to-production model with controlled merges. Access control is role-based, supporting basic and premium user tiers.

    Technical Highlights

The engagement required careful execution across multiple areas of the production system.

    • Safe refactoring of test-generation logic tied to database restructuring
    • Production-safe Auth0 reset and reconfiguration without user lockout
    • Live domain migration with minimal user disruption
    • Fast turnaround on production bugs during rollout
    • Clear separation between staging and production during fixes
    • Clean operational handover with documentation

    Security and Reliability

Controlled access to environments was maintained throughout. Auth configuration was handled deliberately to avoid user lockout. Production changes were validated in staging first. Clear handover reduced operational risk post-engagement.

    Outcomes

    • Platform successfully migrated to new domain
    • Test creator aligned with new database structure
    • Authentication reset and stabilised
    • UI and content updates delivered without breaking production
    • Known production bugs resolved
    • Client left with working system and handover documentation

    Why It Matters

If you're running a live platform and need experienced engineers who can make structural changes without breaking production, Scalexa can help. We're comfortable working directly on live systems with clear change control, focused on reliability, maintainability, and clean handover. Our experience includes delivery for Walmart, Coca-Cola, ESPN, UNICEF, and FIFA—the same standard of execution we brought to this engagement.
