Project Overview
NeuroGym engaged Scalexa to migrate an existing high-traffic WordPress platform from DigitalOcean to AWS. The goal was to move from a manually scaled, load-balanced setup to an automatically scaling AWS architecture, while establishing a longer-term support relationship for ongoing operational reliability.

Client and Platform Context
NeuroGym operates a large WordPress site supporting memberships, forums, and content delivery. Traffic had outgrown the existing infrastructure, which ran on DigitalOcean using HAProxy load balancing across approximately ten application nodes backed by a very large, centralised database server. The site relied on heavy WordPress plugins, increasing operational complexity. The client needed scalability without sacrificing stability.
The Challenge
The engagement required migrating a complex WordPress environment from DigitalOcean to AWS while keeping production stable. We needed to design an architecture capable of automatic scaling under unpredictable traffic loads, support plugin-heavy workloads without introducing instability, and establish safe staging environments for development and testing.
- Migrate complex WordPress environment from DigitalOcean to AWS
- Design autoscaling architecture for unpredictable traffic patterns
- Support plugin-heavy workloads without instability
- Establish safe staging environments separate from production
- Resolve migration issues: missing forum data, incomplete URL rewrites, plugin crashes
- Maintain production stability during active staging resolution
What We Delivered
Scalexa designed and implemented a scalable AWS WordPress architecture to replace the fixed DigitalOcean setup. We migrated the WordPress application, database, and media assets into AWS with load balancing and autoscaling suitable for high-traffic workloads.
- Scalable AWS WordPress architecture replacing fixed infrastructure
- Terraform-managed Infrastructure as Code for reproducible provisioning of VPCs, auto-scaling groups, and load balancers
- Migration of application, database, and media assets to AWS
- Load balancing and autoscaling for high-traffic workloads
- Separate staging environments for safe testing
- Resolution of staging-specific plugin and URL rewrite issues
- Collaborative debugging during testing, rollbacks, and validation
- Ongoing operational support as part of long-term AWS partnership
Solution Architecture
The solution centres on WordPress with membership and forum functionality running on AWS-based scalable compute with load balancing. The centralised database was migrated and tuned for AWS performance characteristics. Separate production and staging deployments ensure safe testing, while the operational model includes backups, rollback capability, and hands-on DevOps support.
Technical Highlights
The project involved migrating a large, plugin-heavy WordPress site to AWS and transitioning from fixed node scaling to an autoscaling architecture. We handled live production traffic safely during migration while debugging real-world WordPress staging issues, including plugin compatibility and update stability under cloud infrastructure.
- Migration of large, plugin-heavy WordPress site to AWS
- Transition from fixed node scaling to autoscaling architecture
- Safe handling of live production traffic during migration
- Real-world debugging of WordPress staging issues
- Plugin compatibility and update stability under cloud infrastructure
- Emphasis on operational reliability, not just infrastructure
Security and Reliability
The architecture separates production and staging environments with backup and rollback capability during plugin updates. Controlled change processes avoid production outages, and the infrastructure is designed for resilience under load. Ongoing optimisation includes AWS cost management, performance tuning for WordPress and database workloads, and CI/CD improvements for safer deployments.
Outcomes
- WordPress platform successfully migrated to AWS
- Infrastructure capable of scaling automatically with traffic
- Stable production environment maintained during migration
- Functional staging environment restored for ongoing development
- Foundation established for long-term AWS support and optimisation
